VUUR: A Unique Fire-Cooked Dining Experience in South Africa

Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s wine country, VUUR offers a dining experience that ignites both the palate and the imagination. The name, “fire” in Afrikaans,  perfectly encapsulates the restaurant’s essence and culinary philosophy. Born from a passion for fire-based cooking and storytelling, VUUR came to life in April 2022 in a small converted stable, quickly gaining popularity for its intimate atmosphere, exceptional food, and carefully curated wine pairings.

At VUUR, dining is elevated to an art form, with two distinct experiences. The original VUUR caters to one group at a time, providing an exclusive, personalised experience. For larger groups, the newer setting on picturesque Goose Island accommodates up to 16 diners at a shared Chef’s Table, plus two additional seats at the Chef’s Counter for those who want a close-up view of the culinary action.

VUUR’s menu celebrates South African culinary traditions and local ingredients, featuring a seven-course journey of vegetables, local meats, fish, and seafood. Each course is thoughtfully paired with wines from Remhoogte Estate, and dietary requirements are accommodated upon booking.

Fire is at the heart of VUUR’s culinary approach. Drawing inspiration from South Africa’s diverse cultures and rich traditions of fire cooking, the chefs employ various techniques to bring out the best in each ingredient. From the coastline’s bounty to the farmlands’ produce, VUUR showcases the finest South African ingredients in a stunning natural setting. Diners may even catch glimpses of local wildlife from their tables, adding to the unique ambiance created by the restaurant’s location on the Remhoogte Wine Estate, with its backdrop of vineyards and the Simonsberg mountain.

Wine pairing complements layered flavours

An integral part of the VUUR experience is the wine pairing, featuring selections from Remhoogte Estate. This family-run winery, located on the foothills of the Simonsberg mountain in Stellenbosch, produces wines that reflect the terroir, family heritage, and passion for winemaking. Diners will sample a range of quality reserve reds, blends, and white wines from the estate’s Reserve, Free to Be, and Premium Range labels, each telling a story of ancient soils, steep slopes, and Atlantic Ocean breezes.

VUUR has won several awards, locally and on the international stage. It ranks 88 on the World’s Best Steak Restaurants list and the Best in Africa. They also won the acclaimed local LUXE Restaurant Awards 2024 for Grillhouse of the Year.
