Mungo fine linen

Mungo, the master weavers

Luxurious woven textiles for the discerning market

Mungo is a family-run homeware textile company that merges the traditional art of weaving with contemporary design. All Mungo products are individually woven at the Mungo Mill in Plettenberg Bay using the highest quality natural fibres. Commitment to quality and transparency underpin the entire process – right from the selection of fibres to the finished product.

Behind each product is the accumulation of thousands of hours of experience, carefully sourced natural fibre yarns, traditional weaving machinery, history and knowledge – both learned and passed down.

In 2020 Mungo became South Africa’s first Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified weaving mill – a world-leading standard that ensures environmentally and socially responsible production processes along the entire supply chain – right from the farming of the raw materials, to the finished product.

Mungo’s mission is to create timeless, natural fibre homeware products designed to last, and to be enjoyed.

The Mungo Mill is a testament to our philosophy of transparency in the production process, with the entire mill open to the public.

The Mungo Mill

All Mungo products are designed, woven and made at the Mungo Mill in Plettenberg Bay.

In evidence of Mungo’s commitment to transparency, the Mungo Mill is open daily to the public. This is a place to connect product to process, bridging the growing gap between manufacturer and consumer. Here you’ll find a showcase of weaving techniques and technology through the ages – from pre-industrial looms to modern day machines.

In 2020 the Mungo Mill became South Africa’s first Global Organic Textile Standard certified weaving mill. GOTS is the world-leading certification for the processing of organic fibres that ensures environmentally and socially responsible production processes along the entire supply chain – right from the farming of the raw materials, through to the finished product.

The Mungo Mill is designed to represent the values on which Mungo was founded – and which are even more relevant today: quality, transparency, integrity and passion.

Provenance

Mungo was founded in 1998 by Master Weaver, Stuart Holding. Born and raised in Bentham, Stuart had completed an apprenticeship in the Yorkshire silk mills in the 1960s – a five year journey which cultivated a life-long passion for textiles.

Thereafter he set sail for South Africa – which is where a new story of family and adventure begins.

In 1998, with two gifted Lancashire looms and a pile of spare parts in his possession, Stu began weaving runs of textiles from an old wool sorting barn, located in the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay. He set out with four decades of weaving knowledge under his belt and an unwavering set of beliefs: a commitment to quality craftsmanship – to make textiles that are beautiful, timeless, and enduring, woven only with the finest natural fibres.

20 years later, Mungo remains a family business, crossing generations. His daughter Tessa is Mungo’s Creative Director, and son Dax manages the business side of things. Mungo employs over 90 people, and our textiles reach all corners of the globe.

Mungo has 4 brick-and-mortar locations in South Africa.

  • Plettenberg Bay | Old Nick Village
  • Cape Town | 78 Hout Street & High Constantia Shopping Centre
  • Joburg | 44 Stanley, Milpark
